Mismatched cousins reunite for a tour of Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the odd couple’s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their real-life ancestors’ family history, who settled in diaspora. Benji Kaplan: Let’s keep moving, let’s stay light, let’s stay agile. Benji Kaplan: The conductor will come, he’ll take the tickets, we tell him we’re going to the bathroom. David Kaplan: Bathroom latecomers. David Kaplan: Sorry, are we the latecomers? Benji Kaplan: Yeah.

By the time it gets to the front, the train will be in the station and we’ll be home free. David Kaplan: That’s so damn stupid. The tickets are probably about twelve dollars. Benji Kaplan: That’s the principle of the thing. We shouldn’t have to pay for train tickets in Poland. David Kaplan: No, it’s not, it was our country. They kicked us out because they thought we were cheap.

He usually adds a nervous edge and some quick, clever dialogue to the roles he plays. He won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival for his recently released A REAL PAIN. Eisenberg produced, wrote and directed this “drama” of a study in the relationships between cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin).

Benji is a sensitive, emotionally aware person who is grieving the loss of his grandmother, to whom he was very close. They take a trip to Poland together, accompanying a group of Jewish historical tourists, which of course brings out various and difficult feelings. This is a beautiful film with fully fleshed out characters that actually evolve as it goes along. It’s clear that they’re both going through something, as everyone in this situation is. The script is nicely paced with a perfect blend of emotional beats and comedy. This is actually Eisenberg’s second film that he’s written and directed, the first being WHEN YOU FINISH SAVING THE WORLD, which is now on my to-see list. After watching SUCCESSION, I knew Kieran Culkin was great, and he’s even better in this.

That said, you can’t overlook Eisenberg’s performance. In some ways, it’s harder to play a subtle role, which he does very well. The film is about generational trauma, different types of pain, and the human condition. gets talked about come awards season.
