Imprisoned for his non-committal at Sing Sing, Divine G finds purpose by performing in a theater group with other incarcerated men in this story of perseverance, humanity and the transformative power of art. the actors rehearse the film in different parts of the play. The group is criticized for not doing comedy, but their previous play was A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which is a comedy.

Late Night with Seth Meyers: Anna Faris/Colman Domingo/Jose Medeles (2024). When everything is taken away from a person’s life, it is almost impossible to find something to keep going on. It is the same for those incarcerated, who face an uncertain future for an indefinite period of time.
And in such difficult circumstances – realistically speaking – one cannot help but wonder if rehabilitation will really be a viable solution
But for some, there is hope through a seemingly unlikely source—the arts—as shown in this fact-based drama about participants in the inmate theater program at New York’s Sing Sing maximum security prison. With a cast that includes professional actors as well as current and former members of the talented incarcerated troupe, viewers will witness the highs and lows of these men as they strive to bring meaning—and hope—to their time behind bars. Director Greg Kwedar’s second film gives a closer look into the lives of these up-and-coming actors, both on stage and in their daily lives in circumstances most of us would probably never even begin to imagine.
In doing so, this offering also takes the audience on a rollercoaster of emotions, from uplifting joys to heartfelt disappointments, revealing the immense strength of character that drives such individuals
imagine it. While the picture’s narrative is admittedly a bit thin and meandering at times, it more than makes up for it in the film’s excellent cast, led by Colman Domingo, Clarence Maclin, Paul Raci and Sean. Bringing unmatched depth to its characters and interpersonal relationships, like almost everyone else in this fine lineup, San Jose is easily some of the best work in these areas I’ve seen in quite some time.
This is especially poignant given that many of the cast in the production can relate to their circumstances from first-hand experience, imbuing the film with an unbroken authenticity rarely seen on the big screen
For his efforts, "Sing Sing" has a good chance of becoming one of the contenders of the 2024 season, especially in the acting categories, and shows us what’s possible when we let our passions surface for their own sake, especially when we have nothing to lose, and is a real source of inspiration from least likely.
