As far as TV shows go, this year was pretty average
Tale
It follows Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham as their long-standing rivalry comes to a head. Coincidentally, Aidan Turner previously filmed at Chavenage House (The Priory in Rivals). The same filming location was also used to portray Trenwith House in the 2015 BBC adaptation of Poldark.
Rivals stands out as an absolute highlight
It’s a multifaceted work that definitely deserves a sequel. Conceptually it’s a soap opera, narratively a satire and stylistically a period piece. A careful viewer will find a message that, for once, isn’t superficial or pushing political idealism, but rather seeks the truth.
Rivals is entertaining, clever, vulgar and funny
No episode feels gratuitous, unnecessary or forced; the story and characters build beautifully to a remarkable climax. The writing, scenes, lines and direction serve the whole package. The soundtrack is a treat for all 80s kids.
The acting is a joy to watch
The always excellent David Tennant shines as a humanized villain with Alex Hassell as the opposing force. Victoria Smurfit and Aidan Turner make a believable, broken couple. Audiences are witnessing the rise of several new stars, especially Bella Maclean who will be a name to be reckoned with in the future.
Highly recommended, the best show of the fall
